Elegant Blinis with Smoked Salmon & Caviar

There’s nothing quite like the combination of smoked salmon, herbed zesty crème fraîche, and luxurious caviar atop a delicate blini. This elegant appetizer is perfect for holiday gatherings or any special occasion, adding a touch of indulgence to your table. Pre-made blinis make this dish effortless, while the twist on traditional crème fraîche elevates it to something truly special—and it’s easier than you might think!

For the Toppings

Smoked Salmon

Caviar

Crème Fraîche

Optional: Dill or Chives

For the Blinis

Store-bought, I purchased a brand "Cool & Simple" found in specialty stores

Assembly

Make the Crème Fraîche

I liked to combine crème fraîche with a dollop of cream cheese,

along with finely chopped dill and capers with lemon zest

Don't forget to season with salt & black pepper

Prepare the Blinis

Briefly warm the store-bought blinis in a 300 degree oven for a few minutes

Layer the Toppings

Pipe or spoon a dollop of crème fraîche to each blini.

Layer with a slice of smoked salmon.

Top with caviar and garnish with a sprig dill or chive

Tips for Success

Make Ahead

Prepare the crème fraîche a day or two in advance for the best flavour.

Serving Style

Arrange the blinis fully composed to make it easy or for an interactive experience have the ingredients in separate serving pieces.

Regardless, I love to present the additional caviar in a serving piece on ice to keep it chilled.

Caviar 101

Choose Reputable Sources:

Buy caviar from trusted suppliers or specialty food stores to ensure freshness and authenticity.

Look for brands with good reviews or certifications.

Understand the Types:

Know the difference between varieties like beluga, osetra, and sevruga.

Each has distinct flavors, textures, and price points.

Check the Label:

Look for terms like "malossol," which means lightly salted, and avoid overly processed options.

Mind the Storage:

Quality caviar is typically sold in refrigerated tins.

Check the expiration date and make sure it’s been kept properly chilled.

Taste Matters More Than Price:

Expensive doesn’t always mean better.

Sampling, when possible, is a great way to find what you like.

Quantity Counts:

Plan for about 1/2 to 1 ounce of caviar per person for a starter portion.

Sustainable Choices:

Look for sustainably farmed caviar to support eco-friendly practices.

Whether you’re hosting an elegant soirée or simply treating yourself to a special moment, these blinis with smoked salmon and caviar are sure to impress.

Pair them with a glass of champagne and enjoy the perfect bite of indulgence
