Creating a Still Life: Arranging Flowers in a Tureen

There’s something timeless and artistic about arranging flowers in a bowl or tureen—it’s like bringing a still life painting to life. For this arrangement, I’m using a treasured tureen I found made In Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, a charming village in Provence known for its beautiful ceramics. With its low, abundant shape, this style invites the blooms to sprawl naturally, creating a sense of effortless beauty. Whether for a dining table, mantel, or entryway, a well-arranged floral bowl adds charm and elegance to any space, perfect for capturing the fleeting beauty of the season.

Start with a Base

Place a floral frog or chicken wire at the bottom of your bowl/tureen to help hold the stems in place.

If you don’t have either, crisscross floral tape across the opening to create a grid.

Add Greens First

Begin with your foliage to create a lush base. Use a variety of textures—like eucalyptus, ivy, or ferns—

and let some drape over the edges to create a natural, overflowing look.

Layer in Your Flowers

Start with larger focal flowers (like roses or peonies and hyrdrangeas) and place them at varying heights to give dimension. Then, fill in with smaller blooms and filler flowers, working in odd numbers for a balanced, organic feel.

Turn as You Go

Rotate the bowl as you arrange to ensure the design looks good from all angles.

his is especially important for a centrepiece that will be viewed from multiple sides.

Add Finishing Touches

Tuck in delicate details like berries, herbs, or trailing vines.

Let a few blooms rest just above the rim for a relaxed, gathered-from-the-garden vibe.

Water and Enjoy

Once your arrangement is complete, fill the bowl with water, making sure the stems are submerged.

Tips & Tricks

Keep it seasonal

Choose flowers and greenery that reflect the time of year to create a cohesive, organic feel.

Refresh as needed

Change the water every 1-2 days, and trim stems slightly to keep the flowers fresh for longer.

Don’t aim for perfection

Let the arrangement flow naturally.

Slightly uneven or wild elements make it feel more like a painterly still life.

Embrace the process—

it's about creating beauty in your space and finding joy in the moment!
