Nestled between the rolling hills of the Catskills and the picturesque landscapes of the Hudson Valley, our recent getaway felt like stepping into a storybook. With cozy inns, scenic drives, and a touch of seasonal magic, this charming corner of New York offered the perfect escape.
Our first stop was Deer Mountain Inn.
We spent two cozy nights surrounded by the scent of a crackling fire and the historical charm this property offers. From the moment we stepped inside, we were wrapped in warmth—a place where Ralph Lauren vibes meet a mix of patterns and thoughtful antiques, creating the perfect balance of rustic and refined. With freshly baked cookies waiting each afternoon to sweeten the experience.
By day, the inn is bathed in light and charm, but when evening falls, it transforms into the most romantic escape. The recent transformation of the inn honours its rich history, once a home for artists, writers, and bohemians who sought solace in nature. The art collection and interiors evoke a deep connection to nature and creativity.
Breakfast is served European style with no sense of urgency.
In the evenings, the space transforms into an intimate dining experience, and it was simply delightful.
The focaccia sourdough was deliciously served with accompaniments like boquerones and whipped butter,
We learned it’s a passion project of the manager himself!
The attic is a perfect escape from the outdoors with a fireplace, pool table and multiple corners to cozy up with a book or board game.

The inn is located in Tannersville, a charming town surrounded by natural beauty, offering outdoor enthusiasts a variety of activities such as hiking, skiing, and exploring nearby Kaaterskill Falls.
Tannersville is known for its quaint, small-town feel, with cozy shops, galleries, and local restaurants that reflect the area's rich history and artistic community.
The town also offers easy access to Hudson, a vibrant cultural hub known for its antique shops, art galleries, and farm-to-table dining. After seeing it pop up so often in my recent research, I was excited to explore it myself. Hudson is easily accessible from New York City via Amtrak, making it a popular destination. While the town is walkable, having a car is ideal for exploring the surrounding area and traveling between nearby towns.
We spent a delightful afternoon exploring Warren St., the main strip in Hudson, wandering in and out of charming boutiques, mostly antique and vintage shops—always a rewarding experience for me.
One highlight was Behida Dolic, a milliner where I bought one of my favourite hats in recent years.
After browsing, we stopped for coffee and a croissant at Hudson Roastery before heading over to
The Maker Hotel for lunch. This boutique hideaway, with its swanky, artistic rooms and beautiful dining spaces, was the perfect spot to unwind.
Some favourite restaurants and shops to explore in Hudson:
Clove & Creek
One evening we ventured to a nearby town Hensonville, and dined at the recently opened Matilda run by the duo behind Wildair in New York City.
It was a wonderful dining experience and the inn it lives inside is quite beautiful too, The Henson.
In addition we were referred a few more restaurants in neighbouring towns that look incredible as well:
A few things to keep in mind: most shops, boutiques, and restaurants are closed Monday through Wednesday, so plan accordingly if these are important parts of your visit.
Additionally, the roads are narrow and winding, which is something to consider, especially for winter trips. Travel times can also be longer than expected, as there's plenty of wildlife to enjoy along the way—
we spotted numerous deer and even owls during our drives.
One additional property we stumbled upon during our drive was the newly opened INNESS, beautifully nestled in Accord. We stopped in for a quick lunch on our way to our next destination, and it was the perfect blend of rustic charm and modern elegance.
Our second stop took us to Wildflower Farms, an Auberge property nestled in the heart of Gardiner.
This tranquil retreat is a true gem, offering a unique blend of luxury and nature.
One of the most enchanting aspects of the property is its integration with the land—
Wildflower is a working farm, which you’re reminded of in delightful ways throughout your stay.
We were lucky enough to experience the Thistle Spa, where we indulged in a relaxing massage that perfectly encapsulated the wellness focus. The mornings were magical, with early deer sightings and the chance to feed the chickens, collecting eggs to enjoy at breakfast.
With 65 free-standing cabins, nearly half of which are tucked away in the woods, the accommodations are both private and serene. Just a short distance up the hill from the soothing sounds of Shawangunk Kill, the cabins offer the perfect escape. Dining at Wildflower is equally special—whether you’re enjoying a seasonal meal at Clay, the farm’s restaurant, or enjoying a cocktail on the Great Porch by a roaring fire, every meal celebrates fresh, local ingredients.
It’s an experience that feels deeply connected to the land and perfectly aligned with the farm’s ethos of sustainability and tranquility.
Our quick impromptu visit to Upstate New York was the perfect mix of relaxation and exploration.
Every stop offered its own unique experience, full of local flavour, wellness, and natural wonder—
a perfect retreat that left us feeling rejuvenated and inspired.
